Inner Visions in Vermont

This series of portraits was created in 2003-4 as adocument of the richness and variety of spiritual experience and expression being practiced in 21st century Vermont. The individuals in these photographs are ordinary people in the profession of the extraordinary – people whose way of life focuses on a place of higher consciousness and deeper connectedness. As Julius Lester of the Beth El Synagogue in St. Johnsbury says, it’s about “finding the holy in the ordinary, and the mystical in the mundane.”

These portraits speak to each of the participants’ journeys, visions, and unique way of seeing the world. In a larger context these photographs are also a portrait of contemporary Vermont – a place whose natural beauty draws so many to its borders; where individual voices and choices matter; and where aesthetic values are often favored over commercial ones.

This project was generously funded in part by the Vermont Arts Council and the Vermont Community Foundation.

Process/Print Info: The photographs were shot on film in a medium format camera. The negatives are scanned, toned, and printed in pigmented ink on smooth fine art paper.
