Irish Dreams
Firmly rooted in Irish tradition is a reverence for all creation, and an understanding of the natural world as a teacher of deep truths. Traveling along the south and west coasts of Ireland, this sense of earth-centered spirituality is palpable, as if the land itself holds sacred stories of magic, mystery, and faith and breathes them into the Irish air.
The overlapping influences of Ireland’s history, geography, mythology and theology seemed to be traveling companions in my brief, but powerful experience of the Irish landscape. The photographs in this body of work reflect my impressions of Ireland as a place whose landscape and people express shared qualities — lyrical, wild, exuberant, defiant, mournful, and mystical. Each image in itself suggests a narrative — revealing a story beyond what was captured at the moment of the photograph.
The Irish Dreams series received a 1st place Golden Light Award for travel photography in 2003, and was exhibited that year at Photo Expo, NY.
Process/Print info: The photographs were shot on 35mm black and white film, from which enlarged paper negatives were made and contacted printed omto silver paper, with deliberate blurring of parts of the image. The silver prints are then scanned, toned, and printed in pigmented inks on textured, fine art paper. Prints are made in 2 sizes: approximately 6 x 9 and 13.5 x 18, in editions of 30 each.
